FAQs

  • Our Canal boat is currently out of service while the National Park Service makes improvements to the Canal through 2026. During this time, we will be running historic walking tours of Georgetown.

When tickets go on sale for our walking tours, they can be purchased by clicking here.

  • We currently do not have a way to let large amounts of people on the boat while it is in dry dock. We are working on building an access ramp to allow for this ability and once its built we’d love to host your event in our unique venue! Please stay tuned for more information.

  • The nearest parking garages are located at 1055 Thomas Jefferson St NW and 1101 30th St NW – less than a 5-minute walk to the Canal boat boarding area. Visit georgetowndc.com/getting-here for all 20+ parking lots and garages in Georgetown, in addition to on-street parking, bike parking, bus and Metro information, and more.

  • Visit georgetowndc.com for more recreational and historical attractions in Georgetown, upcoming events, and business directory.

  • The walking tour will cover between 1.5 and 2 miles, and require walking for around 90 minutes. The path will go over hills, brick walkways, dirt/gravel walkways, city sidewalks and may include stairs. (Tour may be able to be rerouted to avoid stairs if you email in advance). There may be opportunities to sit at occasional stops, but that is not guaranteed.

Printed text of the tour information can be provided upon request.

Please email us with any further questions.

  • In fall 2023, the Canal was drained for approximately 2 years for a major infrastructure rehabilitation project led by the national Park Service (NPS). This project represents a multi-million dollar commitment by NPS to repair Canal locks and walls throughout Georgetown in need of repair. Previously NPS rebuilt Locks 3 & 4 in Georgetown in 2017, which is where the boat program normally begins and ends.

  • All staff are required to maintain up to date COVID vaccination status. We follow DC and NPS guidelines regarding mask requirements for visitors.

  • The tour will take roughly 90 minutes and will begin and end at the C&O Canal visitor center at 1057 Thomas Jefferson Street.

  • You are able to reschedule your walking tour by clicking the “change booking” link in your confirmation email and following the instructions from there.

  • Boat tours will be temporarily paused as the National Park Service begins a multi-year restoration project. We will be launching walking tours in May 2024. Be sure to check our website and social media accounts for updates as Spring approaches!

  • We are planning on launching walking tours this May. Please check back on our website or social media accounts for more information about when tickets are available! ion
