Canal Wildlife

The C&O Canal is one of the most biodiverse national park sites, home to over 120 species of birds alone. Along the first mile of the Canal, you’re most likely to see wading birds such as egrets and the Great Blue Heron, songbird, and wood ducks and other waterfowl. Further down the Canal, hawks, vultures and bald eagles may be spotted.

Turtles, frogs, toads, butterflies and dragonflies also make frequent appearances, with deer, bats and snakes making their home in other areas of the Canal outside of Georgetown.

Visit the
National Park Service website to learn more about the animals of the C&O Canal.
