Repairing Locks 3 & 4

Georgetown Heritage is implementing a series of pilot projects in 2019 to make immediate improvements to the C&O Canal in Georgetown, enhancing visitor safety and comfort. These projects will also serve as a testing ground for concepts and ideas from the Georgetown Canal Plan. We encourage the public to share their feedback on these pilot projects as they are implemented:

As of December 2018 the repairs to Locks 3 and 4 are nearing completion. This work will ensure that the canal can continue to hold water for decades to come without posing a risk to adjacent properties. It also helps maintain the canal as a functioning piece of the region’s flood control plan. Finally, these repairs will allow for the new canal boat to “lock through” as delighted tourists and students witness this impressive feat of engineering.

Water is expected to be back in the canal in early 2019.
